Divine Encounters~A Friend and Her New Book

I seem to learn most of my life lessons through trials. My friend, Jennifer Mersberger, an author, speaker, and women’s ministry leader does too. We met at the North Texas Christian Writers Conference a few years ago.

I love this quote from Jennifer’s website lamplight ministry: “Abundant joy. Challenging trials. Heartbreaking pain. God pours His extravagant love for us through every season of our lives.”

Jennifer, can you share some of your struggles?

Two of my hardest challenges came before I was even walking in the Lord. When I was a sophomore in high school, I was raped by the guy I was dating. I was so ashamed and didn’t want anyone to know because I was so afraid of what they’d think of me.

A few years later and newly married, I had a miscarriage. I was overrun with guilt because I hadn’t been sure I was ready to be a 19-year-old mother. So when I lost the baby, I felt it was my fault. Somewhere in my mind, I thought I got what I deserved.

In both situations, I kept my pain a secret and it began to consume me. Had I played with fire because I was too young to be dating? Was I so selfish that I didn’t deserve to be a mom? My mind twisted the truth around until the lies became reality.

Her book, One Size Fits All: How to Wear God’s Word, comes out in July. It’s an eight-week study filled with applications of how we can apply the Bible to our everyday lives.

What stirred you to write this book?

I love God’s Word, but didn’t always understand how it applied to my life. So I wanted to actually pick it up and put it on so I could learn how to live it out. It’s great to read Scripture, but if we don’t apply its truth in our lives, what’s the point?

What do you love most about women’s ministry?

Actually, women make me nuts! (haha) I have met some of the most amazing women who do not see their value to Christ. I love having the opportunity to get to know them, share my story, and speak God’s truth into their hearts.

Jennifer blogs on Wednesday like I do. Where do you draw your weekly inspiration, Jen?

Everywhere! My blog is about God in the Everyday, and that is what He is so faithful to show me. From a herd of cows, traffic jams, or waiting on a train to cross, He has shown me His truth in so many ways. I’m always excited to see where He’ll show up next!

Do you have a favorite Scripture? What makes it special?

Like most people, I’ve had different Scriptures that I cling to in each season of my life. Right now, I’ve been holding onto Isaiah 43:18-19. Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. When we take a step of faith, the enemy wants to squash us like bugs. But this verse reminds me that not only can God recreate us, He restores us. This journey with Him is a new thing. I’ve not been here before, but I trust He’s leading the way!

I’m so grateful for this Divine Encounter with Jennifer and with each of you. I’m praying for you.

Thank you, Jennifer! Wish we were having coffee together this morning.
