Porch Party in New York — a Preview and a Promise

This past Friday, 5 a.m., I felt a twinge of I’m gonna miss this as my husband and I ended our PORCH PARTY.

“You’ll only be gone a couple of days. I think you’ll be okay,” he said.

“I know.”

But still.

I was flying to Rye, NY for a GUIDEPOSTS writers refresher workshop.

At the last minute, I put JESUS CALLING by Sarah Young in my suitcase. The little jewel of a book has become part of our routine every morning.

Maybe I’ll have a few minutes to porch party alone.

Here’s the gang of workshoppers…

Early Saturday morning at the WAINWRIGHT HOUSE, I poured a cup of coffee and felt the familiar tug to sit on the porch.

The weather was glorious.

Everything appeared to be scrubbed clean from the Friday night storms. I took Jesus Calling and headed for the door.

Would God show up so far from home?

On a different porch.

In a different state.

“You gonna have a porch party this morning?” PEGGY FREZON asked.

“I sure am. Wanna join me?”

“I’d love to.”

It was early.

And unscripted.

A few more of us gathered together.

Our view…

JANET SMITH on the left, Peggy on the right…

Sheryl Smith-Rogers

Marilyn Turk on the left.

Lisa Bogart

Sharon Mangus

Stu Reinenger joined us toward the end of our porch party.

I read from JESUS CALLING,  May 17th.

“These glimpses are tiny foretastes of what you will experience eternally in heaven.”

Tiny foretastes of Heaven–whew!

Sunset that night.

Beauty that exceeds our imagination …

We can’t even imagine, Lord.

A Preview.

 A Promise.

You’re with us.

P.S. If you’re interested in entering the GUIDEPOSTS‘ Writers’ Contest, the deadline is June, 12, 2014.

Here’s the scoop: Tell Us Your Story.

  1. you’re a beautiful traveling porch party!!! Love the photos J…xo

    • Love the way that sounds, Robin. A traveling porch party!!! Hope God opens that door for me, one day, some day…

  2. Patricia Martin says:

    Hope you are having a great time in New York, Julie! that is one unique porch party- all of us are with you in spirit .(;

    • Thank you, Patricia! I could tell–I felt such peace the whole time I was there. Amaaaaaazing time! xo

  3. Thankful you include us in your porch parties:) Anywhere, anytime, He is faithful. Great pics:)

  4. What a sweet, and large, porch party! Bet Rick missed you so much.
Thanks for sharing the lovely morning, the comaraderie of the people you were with, and the love for God that is in your heart and soul no matter what porch, or what state, we happen to be in.
    Hugs and love to you!

    • Hmmmmmm, wonder if Rick DID miss me, B.J.? Wonder if he’d say? Maybe so, but somehow he carried on. 🙂 🙂

That’s what I discovered, that He is with me, in my heart, no matter where, no mater what.

      Love you.

  5. The eye has not seen, nor the ear heard, nor the mind of man imagined all God has in store for us in Heaven!! Glory!

  6. Anna Haney says:

Another winner. I love that we can indeed have our porch parties with God anywhere. He reveals himself to us in so many ways. I left a meeting this afternoon and saw Him in a robin who was carrying sticks and twigs in its beak to make a new nest, the in the geese who inhabit the college’s pond, in the breeze, and in the laughter of my coworkers. God is good all the time. All the time, God is good.

    • And Anna, even if I’d been porch partying alone, He Was THERE.

Love your note–how you see Him all around you. Because He is always there.

A Truth I’m finally leaning into.

  7. Julie,
I loved our Porch Party! I could feel Jesus on the porch with us. I love you my sister-in-Christ.

    • Yes, Yes, loved it, Janet! And I tried to figure out how to use the video of you, but I must’ve done something wrong. 🙁

Such a blessing to meet you, my friend.

  8. Sandra Walker says:

Enjoyed the pictures of the Porch Party!!! Love that word “unscripted”! Thankful you are so sensitive to the Holy Spirit.

    • Yes, Sandra. It was UNSCRIPTED. Unplanned. Unrehearsed. But nevertheless….

      He was with us.

And He was/is more than Enough.

  9. marci says:

That sounds so wonderful. What good fellowship all of you must have had. And I am reminded of the words, “Surely the Lord is in this place” How wonderful that we can have times with Him where ever we are. I love the idea of having porch parties! It is something I must make an effort to do. What a good book to tuck into your bag as you left– Jesus Calling. She writes the best books. Jesus Calling was the first one I read, and they are all written alike, as if Jesus is speaking to us personally. God Bless, Marci’

    • Yes, Marci!! I remember that song from years ago, “Surely the Lord is in this place.” And it’s becoming more real to me–this Truth. I memorized the song way back when, but now, I’m beginning to discover it’s true.

Please let me know when you start having Porch Parties. I can’t tell you how we look forward to them.

I know–I’ve just found out Sarah Young has other books. Can’t wait to start a new one. The thing is–with Jesus Calling, I think I could read it every day for the rest of my life and keep learning. And growing.

      • marci says:

I will let you know– when I start having porch parties, I can see how meaningful they are too you. and I believe they will become as important to me. I wont have to worry about being alone, as there always seems to be cats, kittens, and chickens and peeps near. I might have to move one over to have a seat.

With Monday being the un-official beginning of summer, that may be a good time to start porch parties.

Yes, that is what is so nice about the Sarah Young books, they can be read over and over again. and still inspire and speak to us. Mine have been gone through so much and have so many book marks in them. Years ago there was a book that was written like the Sarah Young books, and that book helped me while I / my family, was going through a very difficult time. That was in the 90s. “God Calling” edited by A.J. Russel, though it was actually written by 2 women that are called “Two Listeners” . One that really stood out to me was Aug 8, the message being to be willing to empty ourselves and trust, depend on the Lord completely. That was the exact message I needed at that time.

I am still hearing that song in my mind, and know Surely the Lord is in This Place, can be anywhere we are. How nice that you memorized it.

I have added you to my regular prayer list, and I so enjoy your writings and your sharing with us all that I also pray for your writings.

        God Bless you Julie,

        • You’re right, Marci–no worries about being alone. And sometimes just being on my porch with just God and me is …. well, maybe a lot like heaven.

I’ve read God Calling too! Bunches of times.

Just so dear to me that you’re praying for me, my friend. Touches my heart.

Thank you. Thank you. This keeps me writing, I’m sure.

          So much love.

  10. Such a wonderful experience to be able to share with you Julie, and the rest of the writers. It meant a lot.

  11. Brenda E. Greene says:

Love this Julie Girl! Since retiring two years ago, Jesus and I have the BEST Porch parties just about every morning! Can’t help but believe every day in Heaven will begin that way and what a blessing for you to introduce SO many writers to that experience…a tad of Heaven here on earth it must have seemed. Thanks for sharing the sweet pics!

Neat story about the mimosa tree that shades my porch table/party As a child I spent many happy hours playing under one. Because they aren’t known as long-living and are messy when they drop their beautiful blossoms and lacy frongs, Hubby does not like them. However when one came up voluntary right in front of our porch three years ago, he agreed to let it stay! For me, it “feels” like a personal gift from God! So… porch parties amid the lovely and lacy shadows of “my” tree and the birds, bees, and other critters that wander into our yard…sure feels like a tad of Heaven on earth for me!

Keep on writing Sweet Julie, you keep touching sweet places in our hearts! Love you! Brenda

    • Brenda, I’m just now entering this…..this type of experience you’re talking about–where it can just be Jesus and me. And this is the most important relationship–even above the relationship with my husband.

Love, love, love what happened with your mimosa tree!!! Sounds like it was a gift straight to your heart from God’s. So personal. Just what you needed. He knows and He cares.

Thank you, my friend. Hugging you in my heart.

      Love you too.
